Photos From The City To Threshold, 2012
This is one example of a something I experimented with during my last year at university. At the time, my drawings were inspired by research and second hand images, i.e. Artists and images from the internet (see: http://meiling-tse.tumblr.com/post/22460281061/drawing-2011-using-a-toothpick-ink-a4).
To widen my inspirational field I went out into the city with the pure idea of taking as many photos with ‘angle’ or ‘perspective’, this idea was unrestricted - basically anything! - which then became more about finding line, shapes and forms.
With some help in the editing, we played around with lots of photos gathered in three days of wandering around the city. Using threshold seemed like the best option to bring out the lines, perspective and shapes.
The resulting images were then pinned to my studio walls as new, additional sources of inspiration that pushed and developed my drawings. They have continued to be images I return to for inspiration in my three-dimensional installations.
21 Swings
Exercise in musical cooperation
Every spring, an interactive installation takes over a high-traffic area in Montréal’s Quartier des spectacles and sets a collective ritual. The installation offers a fresh look at the idea of cooperation, the notion that we can achieve more together than separately.
The result is a giant instrument made of 21 musical swings; each swing in motion triggers different notes, all the swings together compose a piece, but some sounds only emerge from cooperation.
The project stimulates ownership of the public space, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds, and creating a place for playing and hanging out in the middle of the city centre.
